The best time for a child to learn to swim is between age 1 and 4. It's best to start as early as possible within this timeframe because older kids are usually more afraid of the water, but it's never too late to start lessons! Be prepared for your child to cry during their first couple lessons as they get adjusted to the water and to their instructor, especially if they're starting lessons younger.
We recommend starting with a 30 minute lesson to see how your child reacts to their instructor and to being in the water. If your child likes the water and stays focused, we recommend transitioning to 45 minute lessons to allow your child to learn to swim faster. This transition usually happens sooner for older kids, while younger kids are usually better suited for 30 minute lessons.
If your child is younger or has less experience swimming, we recommend starting with 2 lessons per week. This way, your child will adjust to the water more quickly and it will be easier for them to learn to swim. As your child progresses, your instructor will let you know when they are ready to transition to 1 lesson per week.
Every child is different and learns to swim at their own pace. If your child is used to the water, eager to learn, and is consistently in lessons, they could be pool-safe in just a few weeks. For some children who are more afraid of the water, it may take a couple of months to be pool-safe. The most important thing is to be consistent with lessons and patient with your child.
You are more than welcome to watch your child's lesson! If your child becomes distracted by you watching, your instructor may ask you to step away for a bit.
